Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
